GSMC student feted at AJEA 2018
From L to R: Dr. Sam Kamau (Faculty, GSMC), Dr. Nancy Booker (Associate Professor, GSMC), Andrew Tkach (Director of Environmental Reporting Programme, GSMC), Vincent Achuka (MA Digital Journalism Student, GSMC) and Dr. Alex Awiti (Director of East African Institute, AKU) at the Annual Journalism Excellence Awards gala dinner.
Vincent Achuka, a current student of the Master of Arts in Digital Journalism programme at The Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) bagged the sports reporting award together with his colleague Jonathan Komen at the Media Council of Kenya’s Annual Journalism Excellence Awards 2018 (AJEA). Vincent, a journalist at Standard Media also clinched the runner’s up position in the gender, environment, business and good governance reporting awards in the print category.
“It is an honour being considered for so many awards,” said Mr Achuka. “All journalists write stories so that they can spur some change in the society. An award comes as a bonus but it is a sign that good stories still exist out there and it is up to us to find them and tell them.”
GSMC was a knowledge partner of AJEA having hosted the Media summit on 1st August 2018 and presented the awards for the environmental reporting category. AJEA is one of the most prestigious awards for journalists in Kenya and seeks to recognize and award excellence in journalism, encourage professionalism in the practices of journalism as provided for by the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya and encourage Development Journalism in Kenya in line with Kenya’s Vision 2030.
